Wildland Fire Assessment Program
The Wildland Fire Assessment Program (WFAP) was created by the US Forest Service and the National Volunteer Fire Council to provide training on how to conduct home assessments within the wildland-urban interface (WUI).
Local volunteer fire department members or Trinity County Resource Conservation District staff will come out to complete the home assessment to provide recommendations and tips for creating defensible space, Firewise landscaping, home hardening, and/or emergency preparedness. Applicants must reside in Trinity County, CA to qualify for a free home assessment. Applicants can apply to receive a free wildland fire assessment or register in a free training to be a qualified wildland fire readiness assessor for the WFAP.
A non-exhaustive list of what is evaluated in a home assessment is:
- Residents know where the gas, electric, and water main shut-off controls are and how to use them
- Residents created a family disaster plan and supply kit to be prepared for wildfire and potential evacuations
- Tools- such as a shovel, rake, bucket, and hoe – are available for emergencies
- Gutters are free of debris
- Enclosed spaces are ventilated according to local building code requirements
